The Portuguese city of Lisbon will make its Red Bull Air Race debut this year as the World Championship makes its much anticipated return to the country. Not everyone was happy to see the Race switch from its previous home in Porto, but organisers are confident that Portugal's capital city will offer a new and spectacular location while taking the Red Bull Air Race World Championship to the next level. Now in its sixth season, The World Championship has experienced record growth as a global sport. In 2009, 3.5 million spectators attended the races and over 300 million followed on television. This growth has attracted the attention of many major cities around the world due to the positive impact the race has on community and most importantly, a proven track record for delivering strong economic returns for the host city.
Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal, it's considered an alpha global city and is at the seat of the district of Lisbon, it has just over 3 million inhabitants. The city has a Mediterranean climate that is strongly influenced by the Gulf Stream, giving it one of the mildest climates in Europe. It is sunny throughout the year, with an annual average of 2900–3300 hours of sunshine making the Red Bull Air Race event even more enjoyable for everyone involved.
