MotoGP arrives late in Motegi this year after the event had to be postponed due to air travel problems in Europe caused by an Icelandic volcano eruption in April.
At last year's Japanese motorcycle Grand Prix, the MotoGP race marked the 700th premier class race in the history of Grand Prix motorcycle racing. Jorge Lorenzo took the honours on that occasion, ahead of his team-mate Valentino Rossi, to take the overall lead in the world championship. Built in 1997 by Honda, the Twin Ring Motegi takes its name from the fact that there are two race tracks at the facility; a 2.493km (1.549-mile) oval and a 4.8km (2.98-mile) road course. Both courses share garage and grandstand facilities, but are entirely separate otherwise. Based in the town of Motegi in the eastern Tochigi prefecture, the course is set on hills linked to the Hakko mountain chain and surrounded by forest. Unlike anywhere else in the world, the main idea behind the development of Twin Ring Motegi was coexistence with nature, aiming to keep the forest as untouched as possible and leave the water system in its natural state, while reviving and increasing woodlands. A 21st-century playground is also being constructed so that in the future children can play while learning from the plants and animals around them.
