Quiksilver Pro: Smith on fire at Snapper Rocks

After a frustrating run of lay days, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast sparked into life at the weekend with Jordy Smith the standout performer in Round 3.

The ASP world ranked number two defeated 33-year-old replacement surfer Cory Lopez with the day's highest score of 17.17 from a possible 20 after a stunning display of massive turns and aerials.

“I was pretty nervous going into my heat,” Smith said. “I know how well he [Lopez] surfs and I didn’t want to get stuck behind the rocks. Matt [Wilkinson] and those guys psyched me up and it was fun out there surfing with one other guy.

“I’m feeling really good. I feel confident. I have nice boards under my feet and am taking it one event at a time. I’m having fun with it."

Smith will face Brett Simpson (USA) and Adriano de Souza (BRA) in Round 4. Watch Jordy's Round 3 performance below.

There wasn't such good news for Mick Fanning however, as the former world champion was stunned by Dusty Payne, who was delighted with his narrow victory.

“I’m stoked,” Payne said. “Any time you beat those Top 5 or Top 10 guys, you’ve got to be happy with yourself and I’m happy with my performance. I just wish I could have found another good wave.”
