ASP World Tour number two Jordy Smith has scooped the Premier Surfer of the Year award at the fourth annual South African Surfing Awards.
The award caps a remarkable year for the Durban-born star, whose boarding brilliance saw him dominate the junior ranks before going on to waylay many of the world's senior surfing stars.
After finishing 11th in the 2009 ASP World Rankings, Smith currently occupies the number two position, second only to the legendary Kelly Slater.
It was not just his charge up the rankings though which saw Smith nab the prize – his spectacular free-surfing performances which were captured on film last year (including the download-chart topping Rodeo Clown that he pulled during the Red Bull Mentawaisl surf trip) have also won him many plaudits.
