23 April, 2010 Red Bull Singapore announced the names of the judges on the panel which will decide on the winners of the Red Bull Art of Can competition in Singapore. Besides the two heads of Fine Art at Singapores top art institutions Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and LaSalle College of the Arts, the panel of five will also include top local sneaker designer Mark Ong, who is better known as SBTG.
Dr S. Chandrasekaran and Milenko Prvacki will lend their abundance of expertise in reviewing works of art to the event, which is the first time the pop art competition is being held in these parts of the world.
Ong on the other hand, is a name synonymous with the art of sneaker customizing. Since he first came into prominence in 2003 by winning a shoe customization contest on Niketalk.com, he has gained massive attention from the sneaker industry, and SBTG instantly became a
recognized name in the sneaker world, attracting the likes of international superstars like Kobe Bryant, Mike Shinoda and Joe Hahn of Linkin Park, James Lavelle, and Q-tip. Since then, SBTG has also been invited to commission designs for sneaker industry giants like Nike, DC shoes and New Balance.
The other two judges on the panel are Howard Rutkowski and Mary Dinaburg, partners of Fortune Cookie Projects, a curatorial and advisory outfit which introduces major international artists to venues in the Far East and by bringing established and emerging artists from the region to the West. Fortune Cookie Projects is the organiser of Showcase Singapore, the first international contemporary art fair in Southeast Asia, which had its debut in September 2008.
The panel will run their expert eyes on the final entries after the close of submission on 15 May to select the top three winners of the unique creativity contest. The winner gets a pair of air tickets to Berlin, Germany, one of the worlds top art cities, courtesy of Lufthansa Airlines,
while the runner-up bags a trip for two to Melbourne, Australia. The third-placed winner will receive a Canon DSLR.
With the contest open to everyone, regardless of age or artistic background, the final submissions are expected to come from all walks of life and all sorts of formats since the only rule of the competition which participants need to abide by is that they need to incorporate the famous blue and silver Red Bull cans from the Austrian Energy Drink giant in their works of art.
