King Carlos dethroned Marcelo Maragni/Red Bull Photofiles

Carlos wins the final stage of the 2011 Dakar Rally coming home 38s ahead of team-mate Nasser Al-Attiyah, Carlos’ third place overall behind Giniel De Villiers and race winner Nasser makes it a Volkswagen one-two-three on the podium.

Day 14 – Cordoba to Buenos Aires (826km; timed special 181km)

“All in all I’m more than satisfied with the 2011 Dakar Rally. I think that my co-driver Lucas (Cruz) and me did a good job. We were right up there fighting for the victory for a long time.

“Unfortunately two bad days and several mistakes cost us our chance of an overall victory. It just goes to show that when racing the Dakar you must always be alert.

“Before racing a Dakar you know it will be tough and this year was no exception. All Dakar raids are tough, that’s just the way it is.

“Now the race is finished I’m feeling two emotions. I’m obviously happy in one way because the final result is great for the Volkswagen team. I’m delighted for the entire Volkswagen team which truly deserves this one-two-three finish.

“Personally I would like to thank the great team behind me which always did such a fantastic job preparing the car. Everybody worked hard to achieve the best possible result.

“We also have to congratulate Nasser who is a worthy winner after driving a very good race from start to finish.

“As well as being happy for everyone involved with Volkswagen I also feel a little disappointed that it was not Lucas and myself who won. That’s just how racing goes.

“After two tough weeks I can safely say that I gave it my very best shot.”
