Just Blaze is responsible for some of the more significant post-millennium beats in hip hop. His love for details as well as his technical expertise have got him into a league with producers like Dr. Dre or Pharrell Williams. Get to know this New Jersey cat in a fireside chat on Red Bull Music Academy Radio.
Justin Smith a.k.a. Just Blaze took to the mic like a seasoned pro, dealing with the couch kung-fu like a black belt. On his lyrical hitlist were rappers who surround themselves with 'yesmen' in the studio ("It's like, stop asking for their opinion, man."), the honeyz and entourage who roll up for a session ("We got every games console imaginable just outside that door. Now beat it.") and record shop dudes that demand a production credit just for selling breaks. Meanwhile Just is CEO of Fort Knocks Entertainment and has produced tracks on Jay-Z's Black album as well as both albums of Jay-Z's Blueprint duology.
In today's Music Matters, Blaze explains why he doesn't need drink or drugs (just drums!) and we get to hear first hand the New Jersey childhood and upbringing of a hip hop production supremo:
