A collision between leaders Red Bull Sailing and GAC Pindar produced a dramatic day four of the final stop of the 2011 Extreme Sailing World Series in Singapore.
Double Olympic gold medal winner Roman Hagara had to complete three races despite a hole in the hull and is now in second place overall in the world’s top sailing series heading into the final day of racing on Sunday.
“Today wasn’t the first time that Pindar got in our way. That’s extremely disappointing for us. But I’m happy that no one was hurt and our technicians will be able to repair the boat overnight before tomorrow’s racing,“ explained Hagara.
The collision in the ninth race of the day knocked Red Bull bowman Craig Monk out of the boat but he was able to quickly climb back out of the water. Monk said: “We finished that race in fourth place, which is actually quite incredible."
Watch highlights from Day 4:
The Italian team, Luna Rossa, skippered by Max Sirena, were the beneficiaries of the collision – and now lead their French rivals Groupe Edmond de Rothschild by 56 points, a gap almost unseen this year between these teams after a consistent performance from the Italians and a string of disappointing scores for the French.
On the final day on Sunday, two racing sessions are scheduled with a potential for 10 or more races; in other words 110 points plus are up for grabs taking into account the final double points race.
