The Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor gave actor Christoph Waltz a clean sweep of major prizes for his turn as the calculating and sadistic Nazi Colonel Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.
And the Austrian was almost swept off his feet by his reception at a glittering Oscar ceremony at LA’s Kodak Theatre when he collected the award from Penelope Cruz. "Oscar and Penelope. That's an uber-bingo," he grinned, before launching into a brief acceptance speech.
“This is your welcoming embrace. There's no way I can thank you enough, but I can start right now," he said. "Thank you."
The Oscar was the culmination of a year of awards for the Viennese actor, who also picked up best supporting actor awards at Cannes, the Baftas and the Screen Actor’s Guild and Golden Globes in the US, giving him a tally of about 28 prizes.

Waltz, seen here with Tarantino, stunt woman Zoe Bell and actor Omar Doom (one of the Basterds) at Harvey Weinstein’s pre-Oscars party at LA’s Soho House, also thanked the writer/director, describing him as a “fearless explorer” with “unorthodox methods of navigation”.
Waltz’s win, though, was the only won on the night for Inglourious, which had eight other nominations, as Kathryn Bigelow and The Hurt Locker dominated the evening.
The next step for Waltz is the role of another bad guy in Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet, and Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg’s The Talking Cure.
